Books:
Dr. James Dahle’s The White Coat Investor
This book may be one of the easiest finance books to read and understand. It’s written for physicians but would be helpful for any high-income professional or graduate student looking to learn the basics of personal finance. Dr. Dahle does a great job simplifying complex topics and starts the book off by breaking down why learning personal finance is important, even for those of us who have high incomes. It’s a must-read for any doctor.
Jonathan Clement’s How to Think About Money
This may be one of my favorite money-related books. Unlike other books on personal finance, this one is not a guide on how to invest money or save up for retirement. This book challenges your beliefs about money. Clement’s gets readers to think about why they want money and gets them to reconsider using it in different ways that could increase happiness.
Bill Schultheis’s The Coffee House Investor
The classic is one of my go-to finance books. In it, Schultheis challenges our thoughts when it comes to investing. Instead of spending a great deal of time tracking stock returns, Schultheis states we can simplify our lives with 3 key principals. His book endorses the notion that with some basic finance knowledge we can put our investing lives on autopilot and reach our financial goals with minimal effort and risk. Once we master the 3 principles we can spend our time doing other valuable things besides worrying about money.
Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover
I read this book a few years ago and loved it. Dave Ramsey’s step-by-step guide to financial freedom is easy-to-understand and has worked for thousands of people. Some of his principals may not be as applicable to high-income professionals, it’s still worth a read. This book is a great resource for anyone looking to get out of debt.
Suze Orman’s The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, & Broke
This book is a great starting point for young adults looking to get their finances in order. It provides basic info about credit scores, paying off student loan debt, and purchasing a home. She even talks about how to handle finances as a married couple. Not all of her advice is applicable to people in their early 30s, but it’s a great starting point for post-grads in their early to mid-twenties.
Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad and Poor Dad
This was one of the first finance books I ever read, and I LOVED IT! I think most people who read this classic enjoy it as well. Robert Kiyosaki has received quite a bit of backlash for his questionable investment methods and unorthodox opinion on debt, but those nuances aside, Kiyosaki is a master at getting people to think differently about money. Many people read his book and have a paradigm shift that makes them desire entrepreneurship and financial freedom.
